Salvage Program
The salvage program and toner recycling program allow university departments to safely and efficiently dispose of unwanted assets and equipment. All assets purchased with university funds or obtained by a department because of its connection to DePaul (i.e., donations or grants), are the property of DePaul University and the University holds responsibility for their disposal.
Procurement Services serves as the clearinghouse for evaluating an item's worth and ultimate disposition when an item is no longer needed by a department. Departments are not authorized to dispose of their own equipment.
To begin the salvage process, departments should fill out the Asset Disposal form detailing the items they wish to dispose of. This form is then be sent to Procurement Services for review.
Methods of Disposal
Procurement Services will evaluate all items received to determine the best method of disposal. Some common methods include:
- Reallocation - The item is reassigned to another area of need within the university
- Sale - The item is sold to an individual or organization (within or outside of DePaul) via an auction or appropriate price determined by Procurement Services
- Donation - The item is provided as a gift to an appropriate not-for-profit, charitable organization
- Discard - The item it scrapped or recycled in a manner compliant with local, state and federal guidelines
Departments are not at liberty to salvage, donate, or discard equipment or assets without the prior authorization of Procurement Services. Inappropriate methods of disposal include:
- Placing items in the trash
- Taking equipment or assets home for personal use
- Giving items to students or faculty or staff members
- Donating equipment or assets without appropriate approval
- Selling equipment to faculty, staff, or students without appropriate approval
If a department prefers a particular method of disposal (e.g. donation to a specific charity), a request should be included in the comments section of the Asset Disposal form. Such requests are subject to the approval of Procurement Services.
University Salvage Auctions
Procurement Services holds several salvage auctions during the academic year to sell equipment the university no longer requires. This has included a wide array of items, including computers, laptops, monitors, video projectors, printers, PDA's, cell phones, vehicles, furniture, cameras, power tools and software.
All auctions are held online at http://www.universitysalvage.com. To receive an email when auctions are taking place use the subscribe button the site.
Toner Recycling Program
Procurement Services maintains relationships with vendors who pay for used printer toner cartridges. As a result, DePaul University is eligible to receive funds for the toner we recycle.
To participate in this program, simply follow these steps:
- Place your used cartridge in the container that your new cartridge arrived in
- Interoffice it to "Distribution Services - Loop Campus"
Procurement Services receives a check for all returned cartridges about once a month totaling about $1,000-$2,000 per year. These funds are then put into the general scholarship fund with students reaping 100% of the benefits.
This program is a great way to help the environment and the students of our University .
